Till now polling stations were fixed in schools, gram panchayat offices or other government buildings. For the first time in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, polling stations have been fixed in housing societies. Accordingly, there will be polling stations in large housing societies in Pune city, Mumbai, Thane and Mumbai suburbs. This step has been taken by the Central Election Commission this year to increase the voting percentage in urban areas.


Voter turnout in Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha general elections is low in urban areas. Around 50 percent voted in metros. In the hope that these voters will vote if there is a polling station near their home, the Central Election Commission has decided to set up polling stations in societies in Pune, Mumbai, Thane and Mumbai suburbs to increase turnout. Many activities, schemes, contests, ideas are implemented by the Election Commission for more voting. Also, on the day of polling, polling stations are fixed within two kilometers from the house and facilities are provided at the polling stations. However, urban voters show disillusionment on polling day. Educated voters prefer to go out on polling day as it is a holiday. This decision has been taken in this background.

Talking about this, Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra Shrikant Deshpande of the Central Election Commission said, 'There are big housing societies in cities like Pune, Mumbai and Thane. Therefore, the Election Commission has made arrangements for voting within the premises of such large societies. Generally, polling stations are fixed in societies having more than 1000 members. There are going to be 150 such polling stations in the state. It includes 61 polling stations in Mumbai, 36 each in Pune and Thane, and 17 polling stations in Mumbai suburbs. The members of the societies of this place can vote on the spot.
