Central Railway (CR)'s Mumbai Division conducted a month-long Special Drive from 01.07.2026 to 31.07.2026 to ensure passenger safety, maintain discipline, and provide hassle-free travel across stations and trains.
The special drive carried out by different ticket checking squads like Court batches - CSMT & Kalyan, Suburban batches, All ladies Tejaswini batches and ticket checking personnel working at stations and as Amenity teams on trains, etc, with the support of RPF teams and Commercial Officers and Inspectors focused on enforcing key provisions of the Railway Act through intensive checks.
During the drive, a total of 677 cases were detected and a fine of Rs.10.10 lakhs was realized as penalty.
The action taken under four major sections of the Railway Act is as follows:
Section 155 (1) a & b of The Railways Act, 1989 deals with unauthorized entry into a railway compartment and illegal occupation of a reserved train seat or berth or seat reserved by a railway administration, which includes coaches and designated spaces *for persons with disabilities (Divyangjan).
321 cases were detected under Under Section 155(1) and Rs. 6,37,000/- was realized as penalty. This section is strictly enforced to ensure that reserved facilities meant for Divyang passengers are available to them without inconvenience.
93 cases were detected under Under Section 155(1) B and Rs.93,000/- was realized as penalty. This provision deals with travelling in compartments reserved for specific categories of passengers without proper authority.
Section 144 of The Railways Act, 1989 prohibits unauthorized hawking, begging, and canvassing on trains and railway premises. It is punishable with imprisonment for a term up to one year or with fine which-may extend to Rs.2000/-, or both.
99 cases were detected Under Section 144 and Rs. 1,98,000/- was realized as penalty.This action was aimed at preventing congestion, ensuring cleanliness, and safeguarding passengers from unauthorized vendors.
Section 147 of The Railways Act, 1989 makes trespassing on railway tracks or property a punishable offense. Penalties include jail time up to six months, a fine up to 1,000 rupees, or both.
164 cases were detected under Section 147 and Rs.82,000/- was realized as penalty. This drive is part of Central Railway’s continuous efforts to prevent accidents and ensure safety of passengers.
The maximum enforcement was carried out at Mankhurd station with 289 cases and recovery of ₹4,49,000/- as fine, followed by Vadala Road station with 232 cases and ₹2,57,000/- and Thane station with 61 cases and ₹1,22,000/-. Other major stations where action was taken include CSMT, Kalyan, Ghatkopar, Panvel, Masjid, Chinchpokli, Chembur, Sanpada, Sewri, Vashi and Lonavala.
Central Railway reiterates its commitment to providing safe and comfortable travel and such drives will continue in the coming months as part of the ongoing effort to maintain discipline and improve passenger services.
Central Railway appeals to passengers to travel with valid tickets, not to occupy seats reserved for Divyang persons, not to indulge in unauthorized vending and to avoid trespassing. Offenders are liable for penalty and punishment under the Railway Act.
Central Railway also appeals to report any such activity to the nearest on duty Railway personnel or on 139.
