The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) standing committee on Wednesday, December 8, approved a proposal to increase the consultant's fee by INR 7.29 crores.

The opposition, in the BMC, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been opposing the proposal and sought an inquiry on the structures passed by the CAG in its report.

This comes ahead of the civic body polls slated for early next year.

On November 3, the proposal for the same will be put up before the standing committee meeting for the final go-ahead. For package 2 which is from Baroda Palace to the Worli end of the sea link, the project management consultant contract was accorded to the Egis-Colin joint venture.

The contract will be five years in duration and will witness a rise from INR 57.61 crores to INR 64.91 crores. In spite of this, the BMC will not need to incur additional expenses since the alteration of technology will assist in curtailing time and cost.

The technology change is reported to include the transition from multiple foundations to mono pile foundations. Based on accounts, an official elaborated on how this will assist in reducing three months of the project completion.

The official added on how it will also help save INR 6.84 crores. However, presently, owing to technical factors, the civic authority will have to pay the consultant an additional fee. Later, the amount will be transferred to the BMC by the contractor for the coastal road project.

During the standing committee meeting, BJP corporators drew the attention of the committee to the recent CAG remarks. They alleged that INR 215 crores was being unnecessarily paid to the consultants. Further, they alleged that INR 142 crores has been paid to the contractors who have done nothing during the lockdown period.
