The opening of Mumbai’s upcoming promenade along the Coastal Road has been delayed by two weeks due to unseasonal rains. The walkway was earlier expected to be ready by June 15. It will now likely open in July.
The Marine Drive-style stretch is 7.5 kilometres long and 20 metres wide. It is meant to be finished between the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and Priyadarshini Park at Breach Candy. Work halted after heavy rain hit the city on May 26. Since then, scattered rainfall along the coastline has made it hard to continue tasks like laying paver blocks, building cycling tracks, and pouring concrete.
As per reports, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is trying to speed up the process. But further progress will depend on how the weather behaves. The new deadline for completing the work has now been set for June 30.
The promenade will offer public features such as jogging paths, cycling lanes, green spaces, and dining zones. It will also have 20 pedestrian underpasses for easier access. There are nine major entry points to the stretch, including Setalvad Lane, Tata Garden, Mahalaxmi, Lotus Jetty, Haji Ali Juice Centre, Atria Mall, and Madras Wadi in Worli.
The BMC plans to add a new viewing deck along the promenade to give visitors a scenic experience. While many residents have welcomed the project, some have raised concerns over the lack of trees on the cantilevered structure. According to the BMC, trees cannot be planted on such designs.
To address the absence of tree cover, Tata Sons is developing a five-hectare centre median along the Coastal Road. This green patch is part of a larger effort to create around 70 hectares of open space. Most of the land will have plants and lawns, while the rest will be used for public seating, walkways, and cycle tracks.
The BMC has also assigned Reliance Industries Limited to make 53 hectares of reclaimed open space. RIL will submit a detailed landscape plan. This plan will be checked under the rules set by the Supreme Court and the Coastal Regulation Zone guidelines.
The entire development is being funded through corporate social responsibility contributions. The total budget for the project is INR 400 crore.
