The reverse osmosis (RO) plants are installed at the railway stations so that a maximum number of people can utilise the purified drinking water to quench their thirst, especially during the summer season.

Now as the summer approaches, many commuters who travel by local trains in Mumbai have requested to resume the RO drinking water plants at the railway stations that were shut in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

A Twitter user in Marathi wrote, “We understand that there is an increase of COVID-19 cases, but the summer season has also arrived. However, the RO plants at the railway station are closed, which is causing trouble amongst passengers. The railways should take immediate action in this matter as it is not appropriate to install a RO plant and then bring it to a standstill.”

Apart from the passengers, the railway officials, police and vendors at the station might need water during this season. In the past years, it has been observed as sweat trickles down, the lines grow longer by the hour.

Though it free for public users, the vendors pay the IRCTC an annual licence fee, and water and electricity charges.

The RO or ultrafiltration technologies are used as water purifiers by many companies and at stations as ultra-filtration. RO results in wastewater, which the Railways uses to clean platforms. At stations like Kalyan, it is used to water a garden.
