The bus accident that occurred near Veer Kotwal Garden at Dadar Plaza on Monday morning was initially claimed by the driver to have been caused by brake failure. However, a preliminary report submitted by the Tardeo Regional Transport Office (RTO) has stated that the bus's brakes were functioning properly.
According to the report, the accident was most likely caused by driver negligence. Following a recommendation from the police, the process to cancel the driver's licence is expected to begin.
The accident involved an electric bus operated by BEST and manufactured by Olectra. The incident took place around 9:30 a.m. on Monday near Veer Kotwal Garden. One motorcyclist was killed, while six others sustained injuries.
After the accident, the driver claimed that the bus's brakes had failed. However, during the inspection, RTO officials found no evidence of any fault in the braking system.
The preliminary RTO report noted that when officials received the accident-damaged bus, its internal wiring had been severed due to the crash. Since the vehicle is electric, the damaged wiring made it impossible to operate the bus on the road for a full mechanical test. As a result, officials conducted an inspection while the bus remained stationary.
During the examination, no defects were found in either the gearbox or the handbrake. RTO officials concluded that the accident was likely the result of human error. They believe the driver may have panicked and mistakenly pressed the accelerator, causing the bus to veer off course.
The accident-damaged bus is currently in the custody of the BEST administration. BEST has formed a four-member inquiry committee to investigate the incident further. The process to revoke the driver's licence will be initiated after receiving the police recommendation.
