Mumbai Police has acted up on the Bombay High Court's (HC) order banning DJs during Ganeshotsav to curb noise pollution and stated that the violators will face strict legal action. Under the directive, noise levels are limited to 50 decibels between 10 pm and 6 am and only traditional musical instruments are allowed in processions.

Mumbai Police has so far ordered several Ganesh pandals not to use DJs during immersion. The court said that under the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000, it is illegal for individual loudspeakers to generate sound in excess of the prescribed sound level of 55 or 45 decibels, leading to cumulative violations in several cases.

As Ganeshotsav celebrations began in the city on Sunday, 10 August, the arrival of Ganpatis from major mandals such as Lalbaug, Parel and Dadar drew large crowds, accompanied by the traditional beat of drums.

The city police have warned that any breach of the order could result in fines, equipment seizures the suspension of a mandal’s licence and additional restrictions on its pandals. Officers will monitor processions closely to ensure compliance.

Authorities stress that loud DJ music has led to serious health issues in the past, with some cases reportedly resulting in fatalities.
