The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food business license of Mumbai's iconic K. Rustom & Co. ice cream parlour in Churchgate after uncovering serious violations of food safety and hygiene regulations during an inspection.
The inspection was carried out over the past two days at K. Rustom & Co., located in Brabourne Stadium House on Veer Nariman Road, Churchgate. According to the FDA, officials found multiple lapses that could pose a risk to public health.

Acting under Section 32(3) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the Maharashtra FDA ordered the immediate suspension of the establishment's food business license.
As a result, K. Rustom & Co. will not be allowed to resume operations until all identified deficiencies are rectified and the premises fully comply with the food safety standards prescribed by the FDA.
The action against K. Rustom & Co. is part of a broader statewide inspection campaign launched by the Maharashtra FDA to crack down on unhygienic conditions and violations of food safety norms at food establishments.
The department said inspections and enforcement actions are being carried out across the state to ensure strict compliance with food safety regulations and to safeguard consumer health.
K. Rustom & Co., located in Churchgate, is one of Mumbai's oldest and most renowned ice cream parlours. The establishment has been a favourite among Mumbaikars for decades and is especially known for its handmade ice cream sandwiches, making the FDA's action particularly significant.
