The Bombay High Court has criticised the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and other civic authorities for their tolerance of illegal encroachments on a major road in the Powai area, particularly near a school.
The court questioned why unauthorised structures have been allowed to occupy parts of the road and whether the civic authorities have inadvertently encouraged encroachers by providing amenities such as water and toilets instead of taking action to clear the area.
The bench warned that if such encroachments continue unchecked, road congestion could worsen to the point where residents might eventually have to travel by bicycles or horses due to blocked roads.
Expressing frustration over repeated delays and apparent inaction, the judges summoned senior municipal and police officials to explain what concrete steps will be taken. The court made it clear that continued negligence could result in strict consequences, including contempt proceedings, and emphasised the importance of protecting public roads and ensuring civic order for the city’s future.
