The Mayor of Mumbai, Vishwanath Mahadeshwar is moving back to a location near Shivaji Park, soon. A new home which will become the official residence of the First Citizen, is going to be built by tearing down the Dadar Gymkhana. A proposal to this effect was passed at the House meeting of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday.

The gymkhana, in turn, will be relocated to a vacant plot in Mahalaxmi, for which a ₹100 crore provision has been made in the proposal. The Mayor has temporarily shifted to a bungalow in the heart of the Byculla Zoo in January.

Congress corporator and leader of the opposition Ravi Raja said the Mayor of Mumbai was an elected representative and is the holder of such a prestigious position, should have a residence in the heart of the city. He further questioned that if the Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai can live on Pedder Road, why must the Mayor of Mumbai, who is an elected representative, stay in the zoo premises.

However, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has opposed the demolition of Dadar Gymkhana and said that they have been repeatedly saying that Dadar Gymkhana is for the locals. It is morally incorrect to demolish a recreational space for accommodating the Mayor. There are many other places in Mumbai, where the Mayor’s residence could be constructed. Sandeep Deshpande, an MNS leader said that MNS will challenge this in the court of law.
