Mumbai Metro 2A and 7, which is also known as red and yellow lines, have seen a rise in digital ticket bookings after it introduced WhatsApp-based ticketing a month ago.
According to the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL), 56% of all the tickets on these lines are now booked digitally.
Furthermore, paper ticket sales have dropped by 10% since the implementation of WhatsApp ticketing. The blue line, which runs between Versova and Ghatkopar, first introduced WhatsApp ticketing in April 2022. However, MMMOCL extended this facility to the red and yellow lines in late October.
Passengers now use digital options like the Maha Mumbai Metro App, QR code tickets, the Mumbai One Card, and WhatsApp accounts. The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) powers the WhatsApp ticketing system. This platform allows users to purchase tickets without needing extra apps.
To book tickets, commuters on the red and yellow lines can scan a QR code at stations or message "Hello" to 8652635500. Blue Line passengers can send a message to 9670008889. After receiving a link, users can select single-journey or return tickets, choose the number of passengers, and specify origin and destination stations. Payments can be made through QR codes or WhatsApp.
The metro corporation has also closed ticket windows at three stations: Akurli, Poisar, and Eksar. Officials said these windows were unprofitable. The daily ticket sales at these stations were less than 3,500.
As per reports, there are plans to introduce WhatsApp ticketing on the Aqua line (Metro 3) in a few weeks.
