At present, Metro Line 2B operations are limited to the Mandale–Diamond Garden section. With the inclusion of the Chembur metro station, this stretch will be extended, allowing trains to run directly from Mandale (Mankhurd) to Chembur. Officials said efforts are underway to ensure the Chembur station is ready in time to be commissioned along with this phase.
According to MMRDA officials, nearly 80 per cent of the work at Chembur station has already been completed. The remaining construction, along with systems installation, testing, and mandatory safety certification, is expected to be finished before April. Once approvals are secured, passenger services on this section will commence.
Metro Line 2B is being opened in phases to provide early relief to commuters while construction continues on other sections of the corridor. The line is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Mumbai’s eastern suburbs and key residential and commercial areas, while also easing pressure on road traffic and suburban rail services.
Authorities said the phased opening strategy will help residents start benefiting from the metro network sooner, even as work progresses on the remaining stretches of Metro Line 2B.
