After the state government directed strict action against pigeon coops, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now ordered strict action against pigeon coops. Since the issue was raised in the Legislative Council on July 3, the municipal corporation has collected a total of INR 55,700 in fines in 24 wards of the city.

Since the start of the action, the municipal corporation has fined 108 people in 44 pigeon coops and 49 places in the city for feeding pigeons.

The pigeon coop in Ward G (North) of Dadar recorded the highest number of cases (16). Due to which a total fine of INR 7,700 was collected. This was followed by Ward P (East) in Malad East, where a fine of INR 7,500 was collected from 15 people.

According to municipal officials, the crackdown on pigeons began after residents of Dadar raised concerns about the iconic pigeon coop, which has been operating for decades and is the largest in the city.

In recent months, locals have made numerous complaints about respiratory illnesses linked to pigeon droppings and air pollution caused by feathers. In response, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) environment wing launched a campaign in February to shut down the Dadar pigeon coop.

Shiv Sena MLA Manisha Kayande had raised the issue in the Legislative Council. She cited studies linking pigeon droppings and feathers to lung infections and other respiratory diseases.

Responding, Industries Minister Uday Samant said there are 51 designated places for feeding pigeons in Mumbai and assured the House that the government would direct the municipal corporation to close them immediately.

The day after Uday Samant's statement, the illegal part of the Dadar pigeon coop was demolished on July 4, which included a mesh fence surrounding a circular enclosure with a flock of pigeons in the middle of traffic and a covered plastic shed nearby.
