The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)'s Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan, also known as Byculla Zoo, will soon be able to see battery-powered vehicles.

The facility of four vehicles on battery will be made available within a month. This initiative will also allow children, disabled and elderly people to easily travel to parks and zoos. These vehicles will have eight seats.

Under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Ashwini Bhide, Deputy Commissioner (Parks) Kishore Gandhi, the focus has been on expansion of Veermata Jijabai Bhosle Botanical Garden and Zoo, new attractions for tourists etc.

The botanical garden and zoo is spread over an area of nearly 53 acres. A large number of tourists come every day to see the birds and animals in the zoo. This includes children as well as the elderly. State School Education Minister and Mumbai City District Guardian Minister Deepak Kesarkar recently visited Veermata Jijabai Bhosle Botanical Garden and Zoo on the occasion of a function. During this visit, he gave instructions that children, disabled and elderly should be provided environment friendly vehicle for traveling around the zoo.

All the four vehicles will be available during park opening hours i.e. 9.30 am to 6 pm for children aged 3 to 12 years as well as senior citizens. Funds will be transferred from Mumbai City District Planning Officer to purchase the said vehicles.

One vehicle has seating for eight people and four such vehicles will be inducted into the fleet of the Botanical Garden and Zoo within a month. A policy decision regarding the charges for this vehicle facility is yet to be taken.
