Around 30 students of Kamaraj Memorial English High and Junior College in Dharavi were admitted to the hospital due to suspected poisoning. During mid-day meal, a student found a lizard in the food. After that, there was chaos in the school. The students were taken to a private clinic in Sion.

According to the Shahu Nagar police, the mid-day meal was not provided by the school but by a nearby hotel.

"Parents who could not prepare lunch and breakfast for their children contracted with the hotel, which provided lunch to school children every day. It consisted mainly of idli, sambar and other south-Indian dishes," an official told the Free Press Journal.

On Wednesday, March 20, while the children were being served food, a boy saw a lizard floating on the sambar. The panicked student almost tried to vomit to get out. Seeing this, other students also started imitating him. An atmosphere of fear spread among the students. The students were in class 5 and 6. As per standard procedure, the children were taken to a nearby clinic called AYUSH for food poisoning tests.

"Hospital officials said that none of the children suffered from food poisoning, and hence all of them were sent back home with their parents," an official added.

"FDA has collected food samples for inspection and we will take appropriate action after the report. So far no parents have contacted us or registered any complaint with us," Zone 5 DCP Tejashwi Satpute told the Free Press.

A senior FDA official said that they have collected the samples and sent them to the laboratory for testing.
