"As We Are In The Midst Of The Third Wave...," BMC Chief, Aaditya Thackeray Warn Citizens

Amid a sharp spike in the coronavirus cases, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) appealed to all citizens to strictly follow ‘extreme’ Covid-appropriate behaviour -- wear masks in public places, do sanitisation and avoid crowded places.

This came on the day, on Sunday, January 3, Mumbai reported 8,063 new COVID-19 cases. However, out of which 89 per cent were found to be totally asymptomatic. With this, the total number of active cases in Mumbai are now 29,819.

In a statement, the BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal said: “All of us must join hands to tide over this new wave of the pandemic. There is no reason to panic but at the same time all of us have to be extremely cautious and exercise extreme COVID-appropriate behaviour. I also appeal to all the home quarantined patients to strictly abide by home quarantine guidelines. Mask is mandatory in the public and citizens should refrain from going to crowded places.”

Moreover, out of 8,063 new cases, only 503 have been hospitalised out of which 56 cases have been put on oxygenated beds, stated the BMC data. Meanwhile, it also came to light that 90 per cent of hospital beds in Mumbai are vacant.

Besides, Mumbai Guardian Minister Aaditya Thackeray and Maharashtra Minister for Environment and Tourism took to social media and said, “In the past 2 days BMC has changed the reporting method COVID-19 cases and added number of asymptomatic patients/ hospital beds/O2 beds being occupied to avoid unnecessary panic. Fear and panic kept aside, extreme caution and Covid Appropriate Behaviour is a must as we are in the midst of the third wave.”

Though Mumbai did not see any COVID-19 fatality during the day, keeping the toll unchanged at 16,377.
