The Mumbai Police have intensified their drives to closely monitor habitual drug offenders across the city ahead of New Year's ever approaching. Along with that special teams will intensify patrolling on New Year’s Eve to ensure celebrations remain safe and drug-free.

Special Security Arrangements:

The city police will also make special security arrangements, with the deployment of local police and the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), keeping in view the large crowds expected on December 31 at the Gateway of India and city beaches.

Moreover, Nirbhaya squads will be stationed at these locations to prevent incidents of harassment and molestation. Officials said more than 300 police personnel will be stationed at these locations to manage crowds and maintain law and order during New Year's Eve celebrations.

Strict vigilance is in place at over 30 sensitive locations, including nightlife hubs, coastal areas, highways, clubs, and party spots.

Police said the intensified crackdown is aimed at choking supply lines during the festive period, which is traditionally associated with a spike in drug consumption and peddling.

Drugs Seized:

The Mumbai Police’s Anti-Narcotics Cell has seized 1,645 kg of narcotic substances in 2025, including 1,340 kg of ganja, 270 kg of mephedrone (MD), 11 kg of cocaine, and 24 kg of charas. Officials revealed that drug traffickers use code words like “chachi” and “madhuri” for MD during transactions to evade detection.

The biggest seizure involved 270 kg of MD, valued at approximately INR 530 crore, making it the largest single-category recovery this year. Police also seized cocaine worth Rs 84 crore, ganja (cannabis) valued at INR 44 crore, and charas (hashish) worth INR 19 crore, DCP (ANC) Navnath Dhavale informed.

In terms of enforcement, 1372 drug peddlers have been arrested this year, while over 6200 individuals have faced action in drug consumption-related cases.

Raids Conducted:

In a major crackdown, the city police have seized drugs worth nearly INR 700 crore in 2025 so far, signalling zero tolerance for narcotics at December 31. This marks the highest-ever annual drug haul recorded in the city.

Besides, five drug manufacturing units were busted this year. Raids were conducted at multiple locations, including Karjat, Pelhar (Nalasopara), Vasai and Satara, and Mysuru in Karnataka, leading to the busting of five mephedrone (MD) factories.

Special operations have been underway for the past month. To curb supply, 3,015 drug history-sheeters under the NDPS Act are under surveillance.
