To combat the city's worsening air quality, the Mumbai traffic police took a decisive step on Thursday, November 16. They destroyed 584 modified silencers that were seized over the past year.

Over the past fortnight, the traffic police have prosecuted 5,866 drivers for various driving infractions. These include not carrying or having an expired pollution under control (PUC) certificate.

The traffic police's campaign against pollution started on November 7. Until today, it has resulted in 20,000 two-wheelers drivers being fined for violating pollution norms.

It has been reported that 2,051 vehicles have been found to be using exhaust cutouts since the start of the drive, resulting in air pollution. The traffic police have also fined 5,866 drivers for transporting construction material without covering it. This is a violation of the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Rules.

The police confiscated 841 modified silencers and crushed them under a road roller at the traffic police headquarters. This was done to send a clear message to the city's residents about the consequences of air and noise pollution. The police also impounded 1,738 commercial vehicles that were operating in the city beyond the eight-year fitness limit, as per the Bombay High Court's (HC) orders.

Following concerns about air pollution in Mumbai, the government directed the traffic police to take action against polluting vehicles. Traffic officials were asked to penalise vehicles without current PUC certificates, in accordance with the Central Motor Vehicle Rules.

It has also been reported that vehicles with silencer cutouts will also face penalties. The city is expected to see more of such actions.
