Mumbai Police Impose Prohibitory Orders from July 23 to August 6: Rules, Exemptions, Restrictions and Penalties Explained

The Mumbai Police have imposed prohibitory orders across the city from July 23 to August 6, 2026, as a preventive measure to maintain law and order during a period of heightened political and social activity.

The restrictions have been issued under Section 37(3) read with Section 10(2) of the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951, and will remain in force from 12:01 am on July 23 until midnight on August 6 in all areas under the jurisdiction of the Mumbai Police Commissioner.

The order was issued on July 18 by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) and Executive Magistrate Akbar Pathan.

What Is Prohibited?

During the enforcement period, the following activities are prohibited without prior permission:

• Assemblies of five or more persons
• Public processions and marches
• Use of loudspeakers, amplifying instruments, musical bands, and bursting of crackers during processions

The Mumbai Police said these restrictions have been imposed to prevent any breach of peace, maintain public tranquillity, and safeguard life and property.

Activities Exempted from the Restrictions

Several routine and essential activities are exempt from the prohibitory orders, including:

• Marriage ceremonies and related functions
• Funeral gatherings and processions to crematoriums or burial grounds
• Statutory meetings of companies, clubs, co-operative societies, and other associations
• Regular social gatherings for routine business
• Gatherings in cinema halls, theatres, and other public entertainment venues
• Court proceedings and official work at government or local body offices
• Academic activities at educational institutions
• Normal operations in factories, shops, and commercial establishments

In addition, any assembly or procession that receives prior approval from the concerned zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police or other competent authorities will be permitted.

Legal Action for Violations

The police have clarified that investigations and legal proceedings initiated during the validity of the order will continue even after the restrictions expire. Individuals found violating the prohibitory orders may face legal action, and penalties can be imposed even after the enforcement period ends.

Public Awareness Measures

To ensure citizens are informed, the Mumbai Police have directed officials to widely publicise the order by:

• Displaying notices at prominent public places, courts, and government offices
• Making announcements through loudspeakers or megaphones
• Disseminating information through available media platforms

Why Have the Restrictions Been Imposed?

According to the official order, the restrictions are precautionary in nature and are intended to prevent disturbances to public peace and maintain law and order amid the current security environment. The city is expected to witness several public events and heightened security arrangements over the coming weeks.

Authorities have appealed to residents to cooperate with the administration, follow the guidelines, and avoid organising public gatherings without obtaining the necessary permission.

While the restrictions prohibit unlawful assemblies and processions without permission, the order is not a citywide curfew. Essential services, businesses, educational institutions, offices, and other exempted activities will continue to function normally unless otherwise directed by the authorities.
