Mumbai Police has announced that 'No Honking Day' will be observed today, August 9, across the city.

Encouraging the initiative, the city traffic police took to Twitter and said: "Come, Take a stand with us today and spread the word ‘Horn not ok please'!"

In an official statement, the city police stated that this decision has been taken to reduce the growing trend of unnecessary honking among motorists. It causes noise pollution in the environment and also adversely affect human health.

Action will be taken against those who are honking unnecessarily under section 194 (F) of Motor Vehicles Act (MVA). Also action will be taken against those who have modified silencers/exhaust pipes of their two or four wheelers violating norms under section 198 of M.V. Act.

The traffic control branch stated that 'No Honking Day' will also be observed next week on August 16 in Mumbai.

The official statement further added: “Motorists are advised to ensure that, the horns and silencers of their vehicles are as per the guidelines laid down in Rule No. 119 and 120 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules of 1989 respectively.”

Traffic Control Branch, Mumbai appeals all the drivers and riders in Mumbai city, except ambulances, fire brigades and other vehicles on emergency duties, not to honk the horns of their vehicle on August 9 and 16 and on other days as well.
