Mumbai Police seized more than 844 kilograms of drugs from January to October this year. The city police arrested 1,546 individuals allegedly involved in 1260 cases of drug possession or dealing in the city. The overall value of the seized drugs is over INR 410.53 crore.

Ganja tops the list, according to the statistics provided by the police. The statistics revealed that it has been the most seized contraband in the city. According to the statistical data, Mumbai police have managed to seize 593 kilograms of ganja this year during the said period.

The police have registered 752 cases associated with the seizure of ganja. Mumbai Police officials arrested 811 people and seized 593.3 kg of ganja that was valued at INR 2.44 crore.

As per the data provided by Mumbai police, from January to October, the police registered 32 cases related to the seizure of heroin. The police officials arrested 37 people and seized two kilograms of heroin that was valued at INR 4.21 crore. 

Police registered 34 cases associated with the seizure of charas. The officials arrested 55 people and seized 30.6 kilograms of charas that was valued at INR 7.54 crore.

As far as high-end drugs are concerned, the police filed seven cases related to cocaine seizures. In the matter, police arrested 12 people and seized 200 grams of cocaine worth INR 51.86 lakh.

Mumbai Police filed 362 cases related to the seizure of mephedrone or MD. The Mumbai cops arrested 521 people and seized 201.6 kilograms of MD, which cost INR 384.92 crore.

The police have also filed 51 cases related to prohibited cough syrups. Under this category, Mumbai cops arrested 79 people and seized 1576.3 liters of cough syrup worth INR 84.70 lakh. In August, Mumbai Police caught a man who was allegedly trying to sell codeine-based cough syrup (CBCS). He was caught with 79 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup. The police seized all the bottles and detained him.

According to data shared by Anti-Narcotics Cell, across Mumbai, MD is the most consumed drug. This year, the cell filed 62 cases against 133 people for possession, consumption, and sale of MD. From the people they arrested, they have managed to seize 14 kilograms of MD with a market value of INR 282.984 crore. MD's appeal, according to a senior IPS officer, stems from its "flying and quick effect."

In terms of consumption cases, the police have reported 8,299 drug use cases this year and detained 8,299 people in those instances.

In October, the Food And Drug Administration (FDA) directed all pharmacists (retailers and wholesalers) to keep a record of drugs. The FDA asked this owing to spurious drugs making their way from other states into Maharashtra. A senior FDA official stated that they had verified reports of wholesalers and merchants buying fake medications on a massive scale. He claimed that doing this might seriously endanger people's health.

Pharmacists are required by the FDA to set up a separate email account for daily data that must be shared with the authorities. The specifics must mention billing for the quantity of products purchased from other states.
