Over the last few months, projects initiated by Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) have been focused on boosting coastal tourism in the city. One of the new projects which has been included in the existing list of MbPT projects is the Kanhoji Angre Island which will be located 23 km south of the Gateway of India.

Reports submitted by the senior planners state that the island will be constructed in two phases, where the first phase will be made at a cost of ₹8 crore and will involve landscaping, opening up gardens and pathways, repairs of existing buildings, building a gazebo and provision for seating arrangement, whereas the second phase will include building a resort, camping site, and outdoor activities.

Sharing more information, a senior official from MbPT said, “The works were to be completed by October-November 2019, but it got delayed owing to unseasonal rains as the only way to reach the island is via waterways. The second phase will require coastal zone permissions. Once phase one is completed, people can go for day trips to the island.”

Reports also mentioned that an operation and maintenance contractor will be appointed to run various activities on the island and officials will also look at constructing a medical post, bio-toilets and water dispensers.

The island will be named after Maratha admiral Kanhoji Angre, and currently boasts of home to a lighthouse, fort built by Shivaji Bhonsle I and a temple. Besides developing this island, MbPT, in 2020, will also focus on starting water taxis from South Mumbai to Belapur, Vashi, Nerul and Kanhoji Angre Island.

A privately held firm also started a cruise called 'Angriya' from Mumbai to Goa, which departs from MbPT's domestic cruise terminal. Here's a video regarding the service.
