The 10 per cent water cut imposed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the city is all set to be lifted soon.

This development came as the stock in the seven lakes that supply water to mumbai have breached 75 per cent as on 6 am, Monday, July 31.

Senior officials of the municipality and hydraulic engineers will hold a meeting in the first week of August to review the situation and decide on withdrawal of the water cut. Due to heavy rainfall in the catchment area, the water storage in the lakes has increased.

The total capacity of the seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai is 14,47,363 million litres. It was 10,93,379 million liters on July 31 this year. Compared to this, it was 12,84,244 million liters on the same day last year, which was nearly 89 per cent of the total capacity. Meanwhile, in 2021, the water storage was 10,85,189 million liters.

Four lakes namely Modak Sagar, Tansa, Vihar, Tulsi out of all seven lakes in the city started overflowing last week. Remaining lakes -- Middle Vaitarna, Upper Vaitrana and Bhatsa -- have 51.70 per cent, 91.59 per cent, 68.28 per cent water filled respectively.

Officials stated that now the administration has decided to wait for another 8-10 days and take a decision. If there is less rain in August, the dams will not be able to fill. Also, since there is still not enough water storage in Bhatsa and Urdhva Vaitaran, the municipal administration has taken cautious steps.

During the beginning of the rainy season, due to the delayed and scanty rainfall, the water storage had decreased. Every year at the end of July, the water storage exceeds 80 per cent. Due to the late onset of monsoon and lack of rain in the initial period, the stock has decreased this year. Therefore, the municipal administration had implemented a 10 percent water cut across Mumbai on July 1.

However, owing to heavy showers in the month of July, the lakes have managed to recover the collective water stocks in the all the lakes.
