Mumbai has received more than 50 per cent of the average monthly quota for July just within 9 days of this month, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to the reports, the Santacruz observatory has recorded 494 mm of rainfall so far, which is 57 per cent of the required quota of average rain (855.7 mm) in July.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, July 9, the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded 9 mm of rain, while the coastal observatory at Colaba recorded 6 mm of rain.

Moreover, the rainfall in the suburbs has surpassed the 1,000 mm-mark for the season within a fortnight (14 days).

Even as monsoon intensity has dropped over the weekend in Mumbai, till Sunday, July 9, the Santacruz weather station recorded 1,031mm of rainfall and the Colaba facility recorded 656.5mm.

Also in June, the city had surpassed the average monthly quota as it recorded 550 mm rainfall against its monthly quota of 537 mm.

With this, the total water stocks in the seven lakes stood at 23 per cent or 3.34 lakh million litres of the required quantum of 14 lakh million litres.

It is pertinent to note that monsoon onset in Mumbai took place on June 25, which was delayed by nearly two weeks.

Meanwhile, IMD officials maintained that in the ongoing week, the city will experience lesser rains compared to the last week. In its five-day bulletin between July 10 and 12, the weather department has predicted light to moderate rainfall.

The weather bureau has not issued any yellow or orange alert for the maximum city this week so far, however for districts like Pune, Raigad, Sindhudurg, Akola, Amravati and Nagpur, there is a yellow alert for this week as well indicating heavy to very heavy rain.
