Mumbai Rains Update: IMD issues 'orange alert' for July 5, 'yellow alert' till weekend

Between 8 am of Monday, July 3, and Tuesday, July 4, Mumbai received a maximum rainfall at 33 mm. The western suburbs received 18.62 mm of rain followed by the eastern suburbs which received 13.21 mm of downpour.

The India Meteorological Department's (IMD) regional meteorological centre (RMC) in Mumbai has issued an orange alert for Wednesday, July 5 across the city and neighbouring districts of Thane and Palghar. It stated a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall art isolated pockets. 

Moreover, a 'yellow alert' in Mumbai has been issued for the next three days from Wednesday to Friday i.e. from 5-7 July. Besides, heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places on Thursday, July 6, and heavy to very heavy showers at a few places on Friday, July 7, it added.

Moreover, officials have cautioned citizens from venturing to beaches and into the sea, as the maximum tidal surge is expected to touch 4.6 to 4.8 metres, peaking on July 5. It is more than the 4.5-metre high-water mark.

In its five-day forecast, the IMD further stated that the rains will pick up from Thursday, and heavy showers may be seen. On July 6 and 7, Mumbaikars can expect heavy to very heavy rains over Mumbai with July 8 seeing a slight reduction, but rains continue to be heavy. From July 9, the city can see some relief with showers being light to moderate.

On Tuesday, July 4, the city witnessed moderate to heavy rains with continuous showers in some parts of the city. A civic official said the island city, eastern and western suburbs received an average rainfall of 33 mm, 13.21 mm and 18.62 mm, respectively, in the 24-hour period ending at 8 am.
