As Diwali concludes every year, cities such as Mumbai and Delhi face a cloud of polluted air. While the efforts towards resolving the issue are ongoing, here’s some good news that will beam Mumbaikars up post-Diwali. As per a report by System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), Mumbai’s air quality during Diwali has managed to do better than what it was in the past two years.
This year, the Air Quality Index (AQI) on November 8, was recorded at 305, which has been rated as ‘very poor’. However, the air quality experts have stated that the implementation of the Supreme Court’s orders to not burst crackers after 10:00 pm, have ensured that the city air quality does not suffer any more.
As per the SAFAR report, the AQI was lower than last two years’ AQI which indicated that the emission of pollutants was less due to the curbed bursting of firecrackers this year. However, the readings by SAFAR showed that the AQI improved on November 9, after the air quality came down to the ‘poor’ category from ‘very poor’.
Meanwhile, the areas with the highest pollution levels amongst all the SAFAR stations during the day after Diwali, i.e. November 8, were Andheri and Mazgaon. On the other hand, the least polluted stations were Bhandup and Chembur.
