Mumbai Reports 7 Short Circuits, 12 Tree Felling & House Collapse Incidents Amid Over 100 mm Rain in 2 days

As Mumbai continues to witness torrential rains today, July 23, several monsoon-related incidents were reported in the last 24 hours.

This also comes at a time when the city recorded over 100 mm rain for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, July 22. Over 200 mm rain has been recorded in Mumbai’s suburban belt over the past two days, ushering in respite for the city, which was languishing under a rain deficit, this month.

As per reports, seven incidents of short circuits, 11 tree or branch fall cases and a few instances of partial house collapses were reported, one of them in Bhandup. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in any of the incidents.

In 24 hours, between Monday (July 21) and Tuesday (July 22) morning, the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Santacruz observatory logged 108 mm rain, while the Colaba station recorded 40 mm rainfall.

This came a day after torrential rain lashed the city on Monday when the Santacruz observatory recorded 115 mm rain between Sunday (July 20) and Monday (July 21) until 8.30 am.

Meanwhile, according to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s automatic weather stations, between 8 am and 6 pm on Tuesday, the heaviest rain was recorded in the western suburbs at an average rainfall of 14 mm, followed by 8 mm rain in the eastern suburbs and island city division.

As per BMC’s data, Mumbai city recorded 47.77 mm of rain, the eastern suburbs 33.1 mm, and the western suburbs the highest at 53.92 mm in 24 hours. 

After clocking 223 mm rain in the last 48 hours on Tuesday, July 22, the Santacruz station surpassed the 1000-mm rain mark since June. However, despite the heavy spell, data furnished by the IMD show that the Santacruz station is presently reeling under a deficit of 141 mm while the Colaba coastal station has recorded a negative departure of 297 mm rain so far.

Weekly Forecast:

The weather department has issued an orange alert for Thursday, July 24, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall likely to exceed 150 mm within 24 to 36 hours. The IMD has predicted that moderate to heavy showers will continue across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, with intensity expected to rise from late Wednesday morning through the night.
