The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its five-day bulletin, has forecast light showers until Friday, September 1, in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar.

The city received more intense rain in the past few days owing to the westerlies, which brought in moisture. However, there are no westerlies currently. Hence, the city is slated to receive light showers. The city may also experience light thunderstorms during the week but no warnings have been issued as of now, said IMD officials.

Following a month of very heavy rainfall in July, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region has been experiencing a weak monsoon spell in August.

Between Sunday, August 27 and Monday morning, August 28, IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded 23mm rain whereas the coastal Colaba observatory recorded 14mm showers. However, throughout Monday until evening, it recorded only trace rainfall. In meteorology, trace denotes that while the amount of downpour was greater than zero, the proportion was too little to be registered by standard units of measurement.

On August 26, the city registered the highest recorded rainfall for the month of August, this year, with the Santacruz weather station recording 44.6mm rain and the Colaba coastal observatory receiving 10.2mm rain.

The revival of monsoon spells has taken the total quantum of rain received so far in the month of August beyond the 100mm-mark. In contrast, the city recorded 1,769.8 mm rain in July, which was double the rainfall average of 855.7mm for the month.

On the other hand, a yellow alert has been issued for Raigad and Ratnagiri districts for Wednesday, August 30. Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at one or two places likely.
