To monitor the responsibility of contractors for waste management, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to open a control room. This control room will allow real-time tracking of garbage collection vehicles in Mumbai.

Currently, all garbage collection trucks, compactors, and dumpers owned by the municipal solid waste management (SWM) department are equipped with vehicle-tracking monitoring systems (VTMS).

The VTMS allows government officials to keep an eye on the activities of these vehicles and prevent any malpractice. But there is no control room to oversee these vehicles.

As per reports, it is being considered to set up the control room either at the Worli garage or at BMC's Grant Road office. The proposed control room will be equipped with a video wall and other necessary equipment. Municipal employees will monitor the feed in three shifts.

The decision to install VTMS in all vehicles, including water tankers and waste dumping vehicles, was taken by the municipal authorities in 2018. This decision was a response to the exposure of the nullah-desilting fraud in 2015.

The advanced VTMS will monitor if a vehicle has driven recklessly, deviated from its route without prior notice, or missed collecting trash from certain bins. The control room will keep complete records of the city's daily rubbish pickup.

Mumbai currently generates about 6,500 metric tonnes of solid waste annually. The monsoon season sees a surge in waste generation. Of the 1,300 vehicles owned by the SWM department, 1,500 are rented from contractors. Both types of vehicles are equipped with tracking devices.
