As most Mumbaikars are probably aware at this point, the Maharashtra Cabinet recently approved legislation to keep the city’s shops, eateries, as well as multiplexes and other cinema halls open 24 hours a day. Naturally, this ruling is not mandatory, so the choice is up to the vendors to keep their businesses open after standard working hours. Now, some citizens are voicing concerns about keeping the city open 24x7.

One of the primary worries is with regards to public transport which will not remain open 24x7, leaving locals the option between ordering from a wide range of food delivery apps or taking their own vehicle outside. While cab aggregator apps are also a viable option, it may not be feasible in the long run, particularly from an economic perspective. Despite the criticisms and loopholes, an overwhelming majority of the youth have welcomed this move.

Archaeologist and foodie, Kurush Dalal said this was good news for the city, saying it will provide employment as well as a viable option for night owls to grab a bite. However, he also cautioned that this new 24 hours rule won’t apply to means of transportation like buses and trains. He mentioned that the BMC will need to improve its workflow especially with regards to garbage management. Policing also remains a concern as Mumbai has an inadequate number of cops, Dalal added.
