The state transport department in Mumbai has deployed 15 squads in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including the entry points of the city, to prevent pollution caused by transportation of construction materials. Till Friday evening, November 10, the squads had penalised 1,500 vehicles for violating pollution control norms and collected INR 13,80,000 in fines. They had inspected a total of 8,000 transport vehicles.

These squads were deployed after Chief Minister Eknath Shinde held a meeting with various departments and ordered officials to take strict steps to control the rising pollution. Shinde had also ordered the transport department to take measures to control pollution caused by vehicles.

Mumbai has been facing heavy pollution and poor air quality for more than two weeks.
