The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appealed to the administration to consider alternative distribution systems and limitations of geographical conditions. The water tunnel supplying water to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation area was damaged due to digging of wells in Thane, the work of repairing the leakage was started on Friday, March 31, 2023 at a fast pace.

However, given the limitations of alternative distribution systems and geographic conditions, there are limits to water supply. Hence, Mumbaikars are requested to cooperate with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation administration by using water sparingly.

75 percent of the water supply to the water treatment plant at Bhandup Complex is through a 15 km water tunnel of 5,500 mm diameter. This pipeline started leaking water due to the damage caused during the excavation of tunnel in Thane. To fix this leak, the said water tunnel has been closed from March 31, 2023.

Keeping this matter in view, the supply of treated water in the BMC area and by the civic body to Thane city is being reduced by 15 percent for a period of about 30 days from 31st March 2023 till the completion of water tunnel repair work.

However, water is being transported to the Bhandup Complex water treatment plant through alternate channels. During this water supply, some areas of Mumbai city and suburbs, with high altitude population and fringes of the water distribution area may experience water shortage of more than 15 percent.
