Wildlife experts have opposed the proposal to set up a bird park on a municipal plot in Nahur village in the eastern suburbs. Experts have expressed the opinion that instead of building an aviary here, the focus should be on providing essential facilities.
Pawan Sharma, president of the NGO 'Rescue Association for Welfare' (RAW) has submitted suggestions and objections to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) regarding the plan of the BMC to set up an aviary on a plot of land in Nahur village. Along with the civic body, Sharma has sent a letter to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani along with these suggestions and objections. The letter raised objections to the aviary proposal.
Instead, it has been demanded that infrastructure should be provided to solve the problems related to birds and animals. The letter mentions that wildlife rescue center, animal birth control center, animal orphanage, animal crematorium are the need of the hour and emphasis should be placed on such facilities.
Emphasis should be placed on how to better care for animals and birds rather than aviary. Smuggling and poaching have also increased considerably. There is a need to take concrete measures on this. Along with this, attention should be paid to how the environment can be balanced for the birds, said Pawan Sharma of 'RAW'.

The aviary is proposed on two plots of land of about 17 thousand square meters owned by the municipal corporation in Nahur village. It has been decided to appoint a management consultant for this project and this consultant will be entrusted with the responsibility of preparing the layout of the aviary with public facilities and a detailed project report. A tender was invited for the appointment of a Project Management Consultant.
The consultant will have to prepare a picture of the aviary, a detailed project drawing and a report on supervision during construction. Meanwhile, apart from obtaining the approval of the Central Zoo Authority for the project, things like selection of bird species and planning of public facilities are also expected.
The first aviary in the suburbs
The Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Zoo and Botanical Garden (Ranichi Bagh) in Byculla has an old aviary. The aviary in Nahur will be the first aviary in the suburbs. This aviary will have separate sections of birds from different countries. Birds of that country will be seen in the relevant section.
