According to the latest report, four Indian airports — Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Bengaluru — made their way in the world’s 100 best airports by UK-based airline and airport review consultancy Skytrax.

As per the list, Mumbai was placed at 65th rank (down 13 from 52nd rank in 2020). Whereas, Delhi airport has improved its overall ranking, moving from number 50 in 2020 to number 45 in the 2021 World’s Top 50 airport league.

This achievement marks the first Indian airport to achieve this feat, said, officials.

However, with this, it seems that the Adani group, which recently took over Mumbai, will need to work hard to take Mumbai’s ranking up in next year’s listing.

The Skytrax World Airport Awards are voted by customers in the largest, annual global airport customer satisfaction survey. The survey and awards are independent of any airport control or inputs.

The awards are based on the World Airport Survey questionnaires completed by over 100 nationalities of airport customers during the six-month survey period. The survey evaluated the customer experience across the airport service and product key performance indicators such as check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security and immigration through to departure at the gate.

Meanwhile, as per reports, passenger traffic at the city airport surged 59 per cent to 1.1 million commuters in July, a Mumbai Airport spokesperson said on Monday, August 10.

Moreover, the weekend traffic in July accounted for almost 50 per cent of the total passengers. The official added that the airport handled a total of 1.1 million passengers, including international ones, and over 11,400 flights in the previous month after various states eased the COVID-related restrictions.

As per the Airports Authority of India website, in June Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), which is the country's second busiest airport, had seen 6.94 lakh passengers, including 6.33 lakh domestic flyers, in June.

Of these, around five lakh passengers travelled on the weekends alone in the previous month, as compared to three lakh passengers on the weekends of June. Also, of the 11,400 flights operated during July, over 4,000 flights were operated during the weekends.

The civil aviation ministry had increased the seating capacity to 65 per cent with effect from July 5, from the earlier 50 per cent. The gradual opening of offices also led to an increase in the flight capacity and which, in turn, resulted in sequential growth, the spokesperson said.

The weekends saw a majority of passengers travelling to Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, among the domestic sectors and Doha, Newark and Dubai among the international sector, from Mumbai.
