The Mumbai Dabbawalas have increased the fee for delivering tiffins across the city. The monthly fee for each dabba has been increased by INR 200.

This development comes amid a significant rise in transport fares of BEST bus and auto rickshaws along with fuel costs.

The association has said that the decision to increase the fare was taken due to two main reasons: rising inflation and increasing risks in travel.

What will be the price hike?

Now a fee of Rs 1400 will have to be paid to deliver a dabba within five kilometers. An additional fee will be charged for distances beyond that.

So, if the service is to be provided beyond five kilometers, an additional fee of INR 300-400 will be charged as before, depending on the needs of the dabbawalas.

These dabbawalas working in Mumbai have maintained the tradition of visiting Vitthal on Ashadhi Ekadashi. On Sunday, July 6 and the government holiday of Ashadhi Ekadashi, the dabbawalas will visit Panduranga in Pandharpur on that day. Therefore, dabba services will be closed in Mumbai on July 7, and dabbawalas will report for work as usual on Tuesday, July 8, said Subhash Talekar.

Mumbai's dabbawalas are also important in Mumbai's culture. These dabbawalas, who have always taken a vow to serve customers, had to face some difficulties due to COVID.

The famed dabbawala service, jointly operated by the Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Association and the Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Charity Trust, has been delivering home-cooked meals across Mumbai and its suburbs since 1890.
