The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to repair 11 major roads in Prabhadevi, Mahim and Dharavi. These include roads around the densely populated commercial areas of Dadar Junction, Dadar Market and Dharavi.

The project will be implemented on a pilot basis from this October in the G North ward, which includes Dadar, Mahim, Dharavi and Prabhadevi.

Over the past few weeks, the BMC has been selecting these roads based on three key parameters. Roads that provide end-to-end connectivity in congested areas and commercial districts with high pedestrian traffic have been selected.

Roads that carry heavy vehicular traffic require pedestrian-friendly infrastructure for safety. Roads that are bustling with tourists, shoppers, businessmen and vendors require a new approach to urban planning and development.

These roads include.

NC Kelkar Road, Gokhale Road, Jame Jamshed Road in Parsi Colony in Dadar, Takandas Kataria Road near Shivaji Park, 60 Feet Road in Dharavi, 90 Feet Road in Dharavi, Senapati Bapat Road, connecting Dadar and Lower Parel, which is known for its highly congested commercial spaces.

As part of the project, the roads will be upgraded: dedicated footpaths for pedestrians, lane markings and zebra crossings, improved dividers and uniform road furniture including kerbs, light poles and footpath railings

The work will begin in October this year and is expected to be completed by June 2026, before the monsoon.

“These roads have been selected as they provide end-to-end connectivity in this part of the city,” Vinayak Vispute, additional municipal commissioner of G North ward, told Mid-Day. “All the work will be done as part of a standardized project. Depending on its success, other roads will be considered for development.”

In April this year, the BMC initiated action against around 5,000 hawkers plying on footpaths near Dadar railway station.

The civic body also roped in railway officials to stop hawkers from occupying the roads around Dadar Junction.
