Even as the fuel prices remained stagnant today, April 7, the petrol rates in Mumbai and Thane have crossed the INR 120-mark. Whereas the diesel rate is just few paisa away from touching INR 105.

As per reports, petrol and diesel prices were raised by 84-85 paise a litre each on Wednesday, April 6, taking the total increase in rates to INR 10 per litre.

After yesterday’s hike, a litre petrol in the city reached an all-time high of INR 120.51 and diesel is being sold at INR 104.77.

Meanwhile, in Thane, the petrol price hit INR 120.65 and diesel is available for INR 104.90. Moreover, in Maharashtra’s Parbhani, a litre of petrol touched the highest in the state at 123.47, while diesel was available at 106.04. And Amravati comes second in the list of selling most expensive petrol with INR 121.06 per litre; diesel is sold at INR 103.77 per litre.

The per-litre price for petrol in Pune stood at INR 119.48 and INR 102.26 for diesel.

The Congress and the NCP, allies of the three-party MVA government-led by Uddhav Thackeray, accused the BJP-led Narendra Modi government of looting the poor as the prices of petrol and diesel were hiked for 15 days within a month. Additionally, the party workers also staged protest near Dadar station, Mumbai on Tuesday evening, April 5.

Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole took to Twitter and termed the BJP government a "pickpocket". Besides, NCP spokesperson Clyde Crasto also hit out at the BJP, terming the saffron party "lootjeevi" (one which thrives on the loot).

However, it is pertinent to note that Maharashtra’s neighbouring states reduced Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel. However, the state made assurances to citizens, which they did not keep. Elaborating on the issue, Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar told ANI: "I do not want to impose more taxes, rather we have reduced the tax on gas. Along with the state govt, the Centre should also reduce the tax. The central govt imposes more tax than the state & should re-consider it."
