A few days ago, a decision was taken in the Maharashtra Cabinet to change the names of some railway stations in Mumbai. According to this, the state government has the right to change the names of British-era railway stations.

Therefore, in a step towards culturally resonant names, the Maharashtra legislative council on Tuesday, July 9, unanimously passed a resolution to rename seven stations in Mumbai. It was moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandrakant Patil.

The Mahayuti government, comprising Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the BJP, and the NCP led by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, will now submit the new names to the Union government for approval.

Names of most of the stations on the Mumbai suburban network are in English, and it has been argued that they carry a colonial legacy.

7 stations and their new names:

Currey Road Station - Lalbaug

Sandhurst Road - Dongri

Marine Lines - Mumbadevi

Charni Road - Girgaon

Cotton Green - Kalachowki

Dockyard Road - Mazgaon

King’s Circle - Tirthankar Parswanath

It is pertinent to note that the renaming of Sandhurst Road will take effect on both the Central Line and the Harbour Line in Mumbai.

Additionally, the Leader of the Opposition in the council, Ambadas Danve, raised a question regarding renaming the airport in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city, currently called Aurangabad airport.

Prior to this, Mumbai's iconic stations such as Victoria Terminus (VT) to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Elphinstone Road to Prabhadevi were renamed.
