Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has directed that treated water must be used for all construction activities, private gardens, stadiums and institutes in the city, making it clear that potable water should not be used under any circumstances.

Reviewing the city's water situation, Dr. Shinde said the Morbe Dam catchment has received 1,594.20 mm of rainfall so far this monsoon. The reservoir currently stands at 78.76 metres with a usable water storage of 40.62 per cent. Although heavy rainfall was recorded between July 1 and July 8, rainfall has since reduced, making water conservation essential.

The Commissioner instructed all builders to immediately stop using drinking water for construction and instead procure treated water supplied by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). He also directed the Town Planning and Engineering Departments, along with ward offices, to strictly monitor and enforce compliance.

During a review meeting of ongoing and proposed civic projects, Dr. Shinde also called for active public participation in the Centre's 'Catch the Rain' campaign. He urged housing societies and residential colonies to adopt rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge measures to improve water conservation.

The Commissioner instructed officials to continue swift action against unauthorised constructions in compliance with court orders while maintaining proper records. He also ordered structural audits of all hoardings across the city and the formation of dedicated squads in both municipal zones to remove illegal banners.

Dr. Shinde said awareness about the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, should be created among elected representatives and citizens, stressing that cleanliness extends beyond road sweeping and requires active public participation.

Following recent heavy rains and strong winds that caused several trees to fall, he directed officials to speed up the removal of green waste by deploying additional manpower and to ensure scientific pruning of trees.

The Commissioner also ordered immediate repairs to roads damaged after utility works to prevent potholes during the monsoon. He directed builders to keep construction materials covered to reduce air pollution and instructed officials to inspect exposed electrical wires and coordinate with MSEDCL and other agencies for necessary corrective measures.

Considering Navi Mumbai's low-lying geography, Dr. Shinde also directed officials to closely monitor flood-prone areas where waterlogging is likely during periods of heavy rainfall coinciding with high tide.

The meeting also reviewed progress on electoral roll revision, student scholarships, school audits, healthcare services, grievance redressal, citizen services, employee promotions and retirement benefits, PM Gati Shakti projects, property tax and water charges, with the Commissioner directing officials to accelerate work across all departments.
