The Navi Mumbai Traffic Police has recently released a report on traffic accidents in the city for 2022. The report reveals that the Sion-Panvel Highway had the highest number of fatal accidents and injuries among the three main highways in the area.

According to the report, there were 734 reported traffic accidents in Navi Mumbai in 2022, with 110 incidents occurring on the three major thoroughfares - Palm Beach Road, Thane-Belapur Road, and Sion-Panvel Highway.

Out of the total reported accidents, 285 were fatal, resulting in 298 fatalities. Reports further state that 451 people were critically injured in 330 incidents, 109 people received minor injuries, while 31 accidents left no one hurt.

On Sion-Panvel Highway, 24 people lost their lives in 52 accidents, according to the data. Both Thane-Belapur Road and Palm Beach Road suffered deadly accidents, with four fatalities in 19 accidents on Thane-Belapur Road and 12 fatalities in 39 accidents on Palm Beach Road.

The Vashi bridge and Vashi toll naka were identified as the main trouble locations on the Sion Panvel Highway, where accidents frequently result from speeding and carelessness of two-wheeler drivers. Buses, dumpers, and many heavy vehicles on the Sion-Panvel Highway raised the risk for smaller cars and added to the level of congestion.

Moraj Circle, Sarsole Signal, and Akshar Signal were the three locations on Palm Beach Road where most accidents were reported due to overspeeding. The straight roads and drivers overspeeding were the reasons for the accidents in these areas.

To improve road safety, the Navi Mumbai Traffic Police recommended the installation of new CCTV cameras throughout the city to penalise more traffic violators and add more eyes on the road. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) will install these cameras on the recommendation of the Traffic Police.

This move is expected to reduce the number of accidents and improve safety for all road users in Navi Mumbai.

It is pertinent to note that in 2021, there were 22 accidents on Palm Beach Road, 46 accidents on the Sion Panvel Highway, and 36 accidents on the Thane Belapur Road.
