A crowd of around 3,00,000 descended in Mumbai's Marine drive area to witness the Indian cricket team’s victory parade after winning the T20 World Cup.
In order to handle the crowd, the Mumbai police had to deploy around 5,000 personnel at Marine Drive and Wankhede stadium to avoid any mishaps or untoward incidents.
Despite this, there was stampede-like situation due to overcrowding as several fans were injured while some faced trouble breathing.
As per reports, at least 14 persons were admitted to the hospitals for minor injuries, breathing issues or feeling dizzy. However, they were all discharged on the same day.
Of the total, nine were admitted to the state-run GT Hospital, one was taken to the government-run St George's Hospital near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, while some of them at private hospitals.
At some spots, the police had to resort to minor lathi charges as there was no place to move. About a dozen children went missing in the crowd but were reunited with their parents.
While the bus parade began post 7:30 pm, the sea of fans had started gathering at Marine Drive from as early as 3 pm.
Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar appreciated his force for effectively managing the crowd during the victory parade.
