The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to shut down seven measles health centres in the city. This development came after no deaths were reported due to disease for over a month in Mumbai.
Moreover, the health officials stated that the cases are now under control and less than 10 cases are being recorded daily across the city. Besides, over 85 per cent of children aged up to five years have been administered Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine doses.
The ones that will soon cease to function are located in C, H-East, K-East, P-North and L-Wards. The health posts that will be shut are in Panjarpol (Pydhonie), Shantinagar (Bandra East), Sarvodaya Nagar (Andheri east), Appa Pada (Malad), and the Himalaya, Asalfa and Nehru Nagar areas in Kurla.
Meanwhile, after four months, two health posts in the most-affected M-East ward called off the measles outbreaks as no suspected cases of fever and rashes have been found in the past 28 days. Other health posts continue to report one or two suspected cases in a week. The two health posts Annabhau Sathe and Ayodhya Nagar are now closed.
The M-East ward comprises Govandi, Mankhurd, Shivaji Nagar, Cheetah Camp and areas nearby.
According to the civic health department, Mumbai reported nearly 600 confirmed measles cases and 11 deaths between November-December last year. In 2023 so far, 111 cases and four deaths have been reported.
