Similar to an earlier instance, the number of citizens penalized for not donning face masks in Mumbai has risen yet again with an everyday number being 10,000, highlighted a report by the Times of India. Citizens and corporators are, however, claiming that the marshals appointed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are tormenting the citizens for fines.

Based on the statistics released by the civic authority, since the last three days, the number of those fined was regularly near the 10,000-mark each day. In addition to this, more than Rs 18 lakh has been collected in fines every day.

According to the report, corporators believe that the aggressive nature in which the fines are being levied are in fact means of harassment, rather than impelling citizens to wear their masks. They are also saying that at various public junctures, marshals are seen harassing people, even if they are momentarily putting their masks down.

Therefore, to find a solution to these constant arguments, the marshals have been instructed to first take a picture of whom they are going to penalize for not wearing masks. After, this they can proceed to take the penalties, claim sources.

The account further elucidates that last month, the everyday number of those being fined was under 5,000. But, before the festivities and the worry of a possible third wave, the authorities were yet again penalizing more than 10,000 citizens every day. The pinnacle was on September 6, where nearly 14,000 individuals were penalized.

To date, the aggregate number of people penalized by the authorities since the advent of the coronavirus pandemic comes up to 34.4 lakh, with the aggregate fine collected during the same time is Rs 60.5 cr, mentioned the narrative.
