It was the first time Nilam Tambe (22) had flown ever in an airplane, and this trip, last week, was to London. This trip was rather special as the 22-year-old from the Govandi slums became the first Indian recipient of the Prince’s Trust Award, which aims at encouraging and providing jobs, education, and training to young people.

Nilam, the eldest of the three siblings, aspires to become a teacher and has graduated with a degree in commerce. She started working at an early age, and despite the degree, she hasn't been fortunate to get a job, due to the lack of employable skills and inexperience regarding the hiring process. Talking about the same, she said. “I had finished graduation and wanted to earn enough to help my family. My father worked at a construction site, so I didn’t even have any leads in the corporate world.”

Musician Tinie Tempah awarded Nilam with the Prince's Trust Award where she addressed the gathering of 2,500 people, by saying "I now want to become a teacher and help other children achieve their goals.”
