Amid the ongoing Mumbai rains, it has come to light that the total stock in the seven lakes, which supplies drinking water to the city, is nearing the 100 per cent mark. Owing to this, Mumbai is not likely to see any water cuts in 2023.
As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, the seven lakes require 14.47 lakh million litres of water to reach capacity level.
Civic officials stated that with more rain activity likely in the next few days, all lakes will reach the 100 per cent mark by the weekend.
Reports stated that on Monday, September 12, the total water stock in the lakes was at 14.24 lakh million litres.
On July 5, Powai lake in Mumbai's eastern suburbs, from where the water is supplied to industries, overflowed. Thereafter, four lakes, namely, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Tulsi and Vihar, overflowed.
Modak Sagar lake started overflowing on July 13, Tulsi on July 16, and Vihar on August 11. Tansa started overflowing on July 14 and now it is at 99.34 per cent of its capacity.
Last year, at this time, the total water stock in the lakes stood at 13.98 lakh million litres, or at 96.63 per cent.
The maximum water supply comes from Bhatsa (48 per cent), while Tulsi and Vihar provide around 1 to 2 per cent of the water requirement.
Middle Vaitarna provides around 12 per cent, Modak Sagar 11 per cent, Tansa 10 per cent and Upper Vaitarna 16 per cent.
The BMC supplies 3,850 million litres of water to the city every day.
