A year after Aarey Dairy stopped supplying milk to civic-run hospitals, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to provide Tetra milk packs to all its patients. Keeping in view the health of the patients admitted in BMC hospitals, the BMC has decided to provide ready-to-drink milk in tetra packs to the patients admitted in civic hospitals. The BMC has taken this decision to avoid the dangers associated with the management of raw milk.

The annual demand for milk across all BMC hospitals and maternity homes is around 4.78 crore litres. The BMC has issued tenders worth INR 42.82 crore seeking bids for the supply of cow milk in tetra packs. This decision has been taken in the best interest of the patients. Dr. Shinde said, “We have invited tender for supply of ready-to-drink milk in tetra packs for two years”. The BMC used to purchase milk from Aarey Dairy for its hospitals and currently as per the needs of the hospital. Milk is being purchased locally.

To accommodate the change in tetra pack, the BMC has increased its budget from INR 14 crore to INR 42 crore. Purchases will now also include tetra packs of 100 ml and 200 ml. Major hospitals in the city, including KEM, LTMG Sion, Dr RN Cooper and BYL Nair, along with 16 peripheral hospitals and 30 maternity homes, collectively consume 4,000 litres of milk on a daily average. Four major hospitals alone require 700 litres per day, and Aarey Dairy earlier supplied this milk at a subsidised price of INR 39 per litre.
