Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a new partnership between Google Maps and the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking on Wednesday, April 7.
This partnership allows people in Mumbai to get real-time information about BEST buses through Google Maps. The service is available in English, Hindi and Marathi.
Commuters can now easily check which bus is available and at what time. This will help them save time and travel more easily. Fadnavis said this partnership will help improve public transport in Mumbai. He added that the move may increase the number of BEST bus users.
The chief minister asked the BEST team to give full information about all bus routes to Google Maps. This will make sure that the service is useful for everyone.

As per sources, the project uses the General Transit Feed Specification or GTFS system. This is an open-source technology that helps provide the service. The BEST team worked with Google experts for the last two months to make this possible.
Authorities have added metro and local train data. The system is now multimodal, not limited to just buses. Earlier, Google Maps already gave transport options before. But now it will use real-time data for BEST buses, trains, and metro.
At present, Google offers similar public transport services in over 15 cities across India. To use the service, users must open Google Maps on their iOS or Android phone. Then they can type in a destination, click on directions, and tap the train icon to see public transport options.
The app will then show all available routes using BEST buses, trains, and metro, along with live updates. Users can also search for any bus stop to see live information about buses from that stop.
