Whilst there still persists uncertainty regarding the dates of the BMC elections in 2022, the procedure to restructure wards and awareness to upgrade the voters’ registration has commenced at the administration level, highlighted accounts.

Additionally, the civic authority has put together the statistics in regards to the restructuring of the wards and is thus, waiting for approval from the state election commission.

Parties are gearing up for the election, with reports of the ruling coalition commencing the opening of certain projects against the backlash it is receiving from all ends from the opposition. The first week of March is when the current corporation’s term is ending. Whilst, usually the elections are conducted in February, this time around, there persists an air of uncertainty regarding the dates. This is attributed to not just the coronavirus pandemic, but also the controversy in regards to the OBC quota.

According to reports, the civic authority recently finished putting together data on restructuring 227 electoral wards in Mumbai. This comes amidst the Congress and Shiv Sena demanding the rectification of wards.

A report by the Mid-Day quoted the additional municipal commissioner, Suresh Kakani stating that the exercise in regards to the restructuring of wards is over and that they will submit it, post attaining directions from the election commission. Adding that the suggestions, as well as objections over the restructuring, will be done based on the instructions of the commission.

Moreover, the procedure of curating a new voters’ list based on the 2019 state assembly elections has also begun. Interestingly, the boundaries of electoral wards are altered every 10 years based on the division of population and census.
