The state government has taken the plastic ban on a serious note and the same has affected many in the city. After the implementation of the rule on June 23, BMC conducted a check in several malls and outlets across the city and punished many who did not abide by the set regulations.

As per the statement issued by Deputy Commissioner (Special) Nidhi Chaudhary, a total of 867 shops were checked in the malls, shopping centers, and shops on Sunday, out of which 72 outlets were found using plastic bang. Data suggests that approximately 592 kgs of plastic bags were recovered from all these shops. Officials from the BMC imposed a fine INR 3.35 lakh on the same day.

Keeping the importance of the ban in mind, 269 supervisors were trained on Saturday to inspect the condition across Mumbai. A direct action was initiated on Sunday.

Further, a stock of 485.55 kilograms plastic bags was recovered and seized from noon. Chaudhary added that only 5 shopkeepers had refused to pay a penalty of INR 5000. However, BMC Commissioner Ajay Mehta has strictly informed that shopkeepers who do not pay a stamp duty will be charged according to the provisions mentioned in the law.
