Mumbai has received only 35 percent of the average rainfall so far. Last year, there was more than 50 percent rainfall till the fortnight of July. The amount of rain is less in the city and suburbs and since there is sporadic rain in the dam area, only 32.52 percent water has accumulated in all the seven dams that supply water.

Rain started in Mumbai from the last week of June. But in the last twenty-twenty-five days, the rain has not been as strong as it should be. Mumbai receives about 2500 mm of rain during the four months of monsoon every year. It has rained for 16 to 18 days so far and according to the records of automatic rain gauges of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), 764 mm in the city, 929 mm in the eastern suburbs and 999 mm in the western suburbs, i.e. an average of 35 percent. Last year, 1100 to 1400 mm (53 percent) of rain fell till the fortnight of July.

Even in the dam area, there is barely 50 mm of rain every day. On the same day last year, all the seven dams together had more than 11 lakh million litres of water, i.e. 78 percent.
